Feet, Footwear and Falls – Podiatry and Falls Prevention

There are literally hundreds of risk factors for falls that have been identified in the literature.  Foot health and footwear have been the poor relations in terms of research until relatively recently.  However, a series of papers from an Australian research group are finally making inroads into an area of falls prevention that should embed podiatrists firmly within multidisciplinary falls prevention teams.

This article pulls together the key references on foot health and footwear in relation to risks for falls and also a novel and effective podiatry intervention to reduce falls in older people with foot pain and previous history of falls.
